Occupational Therapy in Petaluma

Sometimes, when our children have been diagnosed with a developmental delay or neurological differences, they may have trouble with day to day tasks at school or at home. When this happens, parents are often referred to an Occupational Therapist for help.

We Can Help

Occupational therapy empowers children to be independent in their self-care activities of daily living (ADL’s). Additionally, occupational therapists work on improving children’s gross motor skills, fine motor skills, visuospatial skills, and self-regulation.

Occupational therapists use play as a therapeutic intervention to work on underlying skills needed for self-care activities, such as getting dressed in the morning. Occupational therapists utilize sensory integration therapy, Zones of Regulation©, sensory diet, collaborative joint therapy with our clinical psychologist and/or Board-Certified Behavior Analyst, and collaborative parent consultation.

At the Family Guidance and Therapy Center of Petaluma, we strive to deliver child-centered individualized therapy that focuses on children’s strengths to improve their weaknesses. Collaboration with parents is key in order to fully support the child in therapy and across their environments outside of therapy, such as their home, school, and community.

Assessments

The Family Guidance and Therapy Center of Petaluma offers collaborative multidisciplinary assessments that give a holistic picture of the child being assessed.

Standardized Assessments:

Standardized Assessments administered by the OT measure developmental milestones and skill acquisition in fine motor, gross motor, and visual motor skills.

Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-2 (BOT-2) The BOT-2 assesses children’s gross and fine motor skills from the ages of 4 to 21 years old. It offers several subscale scores that score components of gross motor and fine motor skills, such as bilateral coordination and manual dexterity.

Miller Function and Participation Scales (M-FUN) The M-FUN assesses children’s fine motor and gross motor skills for children ages 2 years old to 7 years old. It provides observational checklists for both home and school environments to compare skills across a child’s environments.

Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Fourth Edition (Bayley-4) The Bayley-4 assesses infant and toddler development across five scales: Cognitive, Language, Motor, Social–Emotional, and Adaptive Behavior. The evaluator administers structured items to the child, and engages the caregiver to support responses where appropriate, to provide assessment of Cognitive, Language, and Motor domains. The Social-Emotional and Adaptive Behavior scales are administered via caregiver questionnaire, which allows caregivers to share their own observations of the child’s abilities.

Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment, Second Edition (NEPSY-2) Assesses children from ages three to 16 years across six domains. The Sensorimotor and visuospatial domains are important aspects we evaluate as part of our comprehensive occupational therapy assessment.

Parent Questionnaires:

Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, Third Edition (ABAS-3, Parent Form ages 0 – 5) Provides a complete assessment of adaptive skills across the lifespan.

Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile (I/T SP) The Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile® was developed to evaluate sensory processing patterns in the very young. The results provide understanding of how sensory processing affects the child’s daily functioning performance.

Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (ages 11+): provides a screening for sensory processing difficulties.

Sensory Processing Measure™- Preschool Form (SPM-P) provides a screening for sensory processing difficulties.
